Celebrating a Century: Worden Thane’s 100th Anniversary

News

July 30, 2024

In June we commemorated the 100th anniversary of Worden Thane, and as we move forward into our centennial year, we feel it is important to reflect on the remarkable journey and rich legacy that began in 1924 when Donovan Worden Sr. opened his practice in the Montana Building.

The Legacy Begins: Donovan Worden Sr.

Born in 1892, Donovan Worden Sr. hailed from a lineage intertwined with Missoula’s history. His father, Tyler J. Worden, was not only a shirttail relation of Missoula’s founder, Francis Worden but also a significant figure in the community. Tyler left New Brunswick in 1882 to work for A.B. Hammond at the Missoula Mercantile store in Stevensville. After marrying Mattie Landers in 1887, Tyler established Worden’s Market at 126 North Higgins in 1890, which remains Missoula’s oldest grocery store.

Tyler Worden was a dedicated public servant, serving as a city council member, county commissioner, and state senator. He was among the few who refused bribes during W.A. Clark’s infamous 1899 Senate campaign. His legacy includes his pivotal role in constructing the Missoula Courthouse and his stately family home at 400 East Pine.

Building a Legal Legacy

Donovan Sr. followed in his father’s footsteps, attending Missoula schools and earning his law degree in 1923. After working as a deputy clerk of court, he opened his practice in 1924. His legal career was marked by significant public service, including roles as deputy county attorney, state legislator, and state senator. He was deeply involved in community service, contributing to numerous boards and commissions, and was recognized for his legal expertise and dedication to the community.

One of Donovan Sr.’s notable legal achievements was a 1929 lawsuit adjudicating water rights on Lolo Creek, which included the Lolo Ditch and four major Maclay ranches. His sudden death in 1967 marked the end of an era, but his legacy continued to inspire those who followed.

A Family Tradition: Donovan Worden Jr.

Donovan Worden Jr. continued the family tradition of legal excellence and community service. After serving in the Navy during World War II and earning his law degree in 1948, he joined his father’s firm, which became Worden & Worden. Donovan Jr. was not only an accomplished lawyer but also a committed community leader, actively participating in various organizations, including the Western Montana Bar, Missoula Airport Commission, and the Rotary Club. His musical talents and love for woodworking were well-known, adding to his multifaceted legacy.

Expanding the Firm

In 1963, the firm expanded with the addition of Jeremy Thane and Norm Robb, becoming Worden Thane & Robb. Jeremy Thane brought expertise in labor law and insurance defense and was known for his extensive community involvement and pro bono work. His dedication earned him the Pro Bono Attorney of the Year award and the Jamerson award.

Over the years, many distinguished attorneys joined the firm, including Judge Haines in 1964, Mike Williams in 1967, and several others who contributed to the firm’s growth and success.

Looking Ahead

As Worden Thane celebrates its centennial, we honor the dedication, integrity, and community spirit that have been the hallmarks of its founders and members. From Donovan Worden Sr.’s pioneering days to the diverse and dynamic team that drives the firm today, Worden Thane remains committed to excellence in legal service and community engagement.

Thank you to everyone who joined us to celebrate our anniversary, and here’s to the next 100 years of making a positive impact in Missoula and beyond.
